White Water Rafting – 4 Top African Sites
1. Crossing the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, the Zambezi river offers great rafting. Consider a trip through the wildlife-rich lower Zambezi as it meanders past Mana Pools National Park, while on the other hand, the British Canoe Union had defined the grade 5 rapids below the Victoria Falls on the Zambezi as ‘extremely difficult, long and violent rapids, steep gradients, big drops and pressure areas’.
2. The Tugela river offers the most spectacular white water rafting opportunities in South Africa. It is a white water river, with rapids graded 2 - 5. In one 22 km section you can tackle nineteen rapids including Four-Man Hole, Whiplash Smile, Horrible Horris and Unicorn! While the rafting sections may be short, land rover portage from one section to the next can make this trip a combined raft and safari extravaganza.
3. The White Nile in Uganda is the source of the longest river in the world, and the White Nile has some of the most ferocious big water rapids on earth. Thundering between heavily forested islands. The water levels of the White Nile are subject to very little seasonal variation which means that the rafting is excellent at any time of year. However, the accommodation can be rudimentary and you need to check with your insurer if they cover this region.
4. The Tana River in Nairobi – about 100 km from the capital - offers a great mix of high action white water - with rapids up to grade V - interspersed with scenic calm water where birdlife abounds and opportunities for photography are commonplace.
