Avoiding Dizziness
We all get dizzy at various times. Often this can be because of heat, dehydration or excess activity that drains glucose from the brain to the muscles. If you suddenly feel dizzy, stand still and focus on something stationary, such as a window frame – it helps to put your hand flat on something horizontal which ‘reminds’ your body where the horizontal and vertical planes actually are.
When you feel dizzy after floor exercise such as crunches or press ups, make sure you get up slowly. Many people feel dizzy when they get up too suddenly.
Remember to drink plenty in summer as holiday dizziness is often caused by lack of hydration. When you perspire excessively in hot weather or during exercise, your blood pressure may drop, and you lose important minerals, that help the brain calibrate balance. So try to drink at least 8 to 12 glasses of water on hot days. If you're actively exercising, drink water before, during and after exercise too.
Breathe slowly and steadily. If you sometimes hold your breath or hyperventilate (breathe too rapidly) when you're stressed or exercising, your body expels more carbon dioxide than usual. This results in dizziness. To slow down your breathing, concentrate on pushing your belly out when you inhale and pulling it in as you exhale – this has the added benefit of exercising your core muscles. Make sure you keep your shoulders still. With slower, deeper breathing, the carbon dioxide balance is restored, and dizziness disappears. Should it not vanish swiftly, you can breathe into your cupped hands a few times to recapture some of the carbon dioxide you’re breathing out.
