Fun Running

A Fun Run normally takes one of two forms: it’s an event organised by a charity in which runners take part, usually aiming to raise funds for the good cause that’s putting on the run, or for some other good cause, or it’s an event organised by the fitness as health community to promote running as a form of exercise and to encourage people to take it up. These two don’t have to be mutually exclusive – many local authorities and running clubs organise fun runs for local charities.

The things you need to know about fun runs are that although the runners at the front may be very competitive, most people on the course are just there to enjoy themselves. It’s likely that many will be in silly costumes and more than a few will not have trained seriously for the event. You’re not supposed to come to a fun run full of determination to run your fastest race ever. If you complain that you won’t be able to get a good start because there are four men in chicken costumes and twenty overweight women from the local chip factory in front of you, you will be considered a spoilsport.

So what’s the point, you ask? The point of a fun run is to take pleasure in mass participation. You should be able enjoy the fancy dress runners (even when you’re overtaken by Postman Pat and his black and white cat!) and respond to the crowd lining the route. You should use your fitness and training to help along some of the fat ladies who have begun this race full of the desire to make money for a charity and who now just want to stop and sit on the side of the road and you should take pride in being one of those runners who makes it to the end having supported a new running intake to feel the huge success that comes from crossing the finishing line.
