Qi Gong principles
Qi Gong – pronounced chee gong by most people – is an ancient Chinese practice. It is one of the four principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine: the others being acupuncture, massage and herbal treatments. The four pillars of TCM are considered to be the route to mental, physical and spiritual health. Qi means life force and Gong means to practice or cultivate something, so the process is to cultivate your life force.
It is also the fundamental underpinning of such activities as Kung Fu and T’ai Chi, and the practitioners of martial arts all learn it as part of their development of mental and physical awareness and self discipline.
In the West, we can use Qi Gong to help us balance our stressed lifestyles and to make us aware of the relationship between mind, breath and body and how we can utilise them to move towards our goals in developing a confident, well balanced and healthy lifestyle.
Qi Gong exercises claim to help us:
- Improve stamina and vitality – by rebalancing our internal systems
- Enhance our ‘sleepfulness’ – by teaching us when and how to relax
- Improve our digestion and diet – by making us mindful of when, how and what we eat
- Deliver better circulation – by improving the body’s ability to function
- Develop intellectual capacities – by stopping worry and encouraging creative thought
- Strengthen our emotional stability – by building optimism and clear thought
- Boost immune systems – by integrating body, mind and nourishment
- Reduce stress – by teaching us to relax and reinvigorate our systems
- Improve our energy levels and resilience – by creating storehouses of energy we can call on at will
- Help our internal organs do their jobs properly – by giving them the fuel and the instructions to act in our best interests.
