Design your own Triathlon

We’ve all seen those lunatics on TV, swimming miles, cycling dozens of miles and then running dozens more. However, while most of us will never go to the extreme of actually training for a ‘tri’ let alone taking it up as a competitive sport, the idea of three balancing forms of exercise is a superb one for all round fitness.

If you are getting bored with your usual training, consider running to the local swimming pool, taking a swim and then catching the bus home. We do this as a team, with one person detailed to drive there with all the swim bags and towels and another driving back while the first driver follows his swim with a run back home. It’s very bracing to finish a hot run with a lovely cool swim and it eases out the muscles that have tightened in running, as well as giving the upper body a work out that it doesn’t normally get during a run.

We also use the same technique for cycling, although here you have to have riders who can pair up on one bike with the same wheel size. One person rides the bike to a predestined point while the other runs there. Pause for a water break and then swap over – the former cyclist runs home and the former runner cycles back.

You can even fit the three together without too much effort: cycle to the pool, chain up your bike, swim, run home and go back the next day on the bus to collect your bike. It doesn’t have to be a bike either. I know people who ‘tri’ with skateboards and rollerblades too.
