Great tricks to teach your body – 2
Cure your toothache before you get to the dentist
No, not six aspirin washed down with a quadruple rum. Rub ice on the V-shaped web of skin between your thumb and first finger. A Canadian study found that this technique reduces toothache pain by as much as 50 percent compared with using no ice. The nerve pathways at the base of that point stimulate an area of the brain that blocks pain signals from the face and hands.
Make burns disappear
When you accidentally scorch your finger, clean the area and then apply light pressure with the finger tips of your unburnt hand. While ice will relieve your pain more quickly, this natural method brings the burned skin back to a normal temperature, which means it is skin is less likely to blister.
Stop the world from spinning
If you get up too fast or have one too many drinks, simply put your hand on something stable. The part of your ear responsible for balance—the cupula—floats in a fluid of the same density as blood, which can be thinned by alcohol or driven below the cupula if you stand up fast, which confuses your brain. The input from your fingertips gives the brain a second opinion, and you feel more in balance. Because the nerves in the hand are so sensitive, this works faster than fixing your eyes on the horizon.
Running out of stitches
Most of us who are right handed, exhale as our right foot hits the ground when we run. This puts downward pressure on your liver – which is on the right hand side of the body - which then tugs at the diaphragm and creates a side stitch. Exhale as your left foot strikes the ground and this problem won’t occur.
