Originally the brainwave of Renzo Rosso in 1978, Diesel brought fresh and invigorating designs to the younger generation. This is a company who were not afraid of taking risks and hired a ‘wet behind the ears’ fashion designer called Wilbert Das. Das left college and took his first job with Diesel. He was employed by the company in 1988 and to this day is still a part of the team. He is now the Creative Director.
The company started out with designer clothing, particularly jeans but this swiftly led to accessories which included watches, bags and fragrances. Renzo was an easy going type of guy and cut his designers some slack by giving them the freedom to be as daring and flamboyant as they chose. He was looking for the most striking and innovative product in the world. This attitude secured him a range which liberated itself from the confines of ‘play it safe’ designs. For too long, dull looking watches had stifled the world of fashion and were cloning people into becoming the ‘Average Joe’.
The aim was to build a company which would lift people out of the doldrums and create styles which would allow individuals to make their own personal statement. Watches were created to suit a multitude of personalities, lifestyles and tastes.
From humble little acorns in Northern Italy, this company have grown into lavish oaks simply by refusing to conform to the norm.
Diesel did not want to create with restrictions and their range emanated this defiance with their first timepieces.
