Titanium, as opposed to other metals can be considered quite recent in its discovery. It was discovered in the late eighteenth century and a major benefit of it is it can be mixed to create alloys that are corrosion resistant, durable and strong. It is used for a wide variety of purposes and is probably most famous for being used on spacecraft, due to its lightweight nature. As well as for this it is also used in sports equipment, tennis rackets for example. Again because it is so light the racket is even more lightweight and so improves the player’s game. Another significant use is in the manufacture of jewellery, particularly watches. Titanium watches are not as simple to produce as one might expect and for this reason initially they were quite expensive, selling in the US market for thousands of dollars. Nowadays, however, they seem to be ubiquitous with countless manufacturers producing them. They are very popular due to their good looks and lightweight frame, so popular in fact that you can even buy a toy watch for your child, made out of imitation titanium. Every maker of timepieces now produces titanium watches, even if there is only one in their range. As it is so strong but also so light it is perfect in the design of a watch. One problem with using it to make watches though is that it can scratch extremely easily. Therefore during the manufacturing process they are usually protected by a layer of very thin glass, the glass is scratch resistant and protects the titanium underneath, allowing a watch that is robust as well as elegant. Titanium watches are in very high demand, unlike other metals though there is a plentiful supply on the planet. This is partly the reason why you can now buy them at such reasonable prices. The production costs have been reduced so much that they can now be made much cheaper than when they were first introduced. Although they are still more expensive than an everyday watch, you will know that if it is made from titanium it will be strong and will be resistant to a few small knocks, as well as being waterproof. If you are in the market for a new watch, titanium watches should be high on your list of considerations. Or perhaps you have decided that you are going to buy a new watch for a friend or relative’s birthday, Christmas or anniversary present. In which case a titanium watch will make for a decent and thoughtful gift. If you visit your local jeweler they may offer an engraving service, allowing you to place a special message onto the work for the recipient. This adds an extra dimension to your gift and every time they look at the watch they will be reminded of you.
